I have always been someone who loves birthdays, especially my own. While I’m not exactly thrilled about ageing anymore (yes, I used to love the idea of growing older as a kid, but then, didn’t we all?) I can’t help but get excited every time November rolls around. (My birthday was on the 29th of November, so this post is a whole week late. Sorry about that!)
Your birthday is your own personal new year – an opportunity for a brand new start! It’s also a chance to be thankful – thankful that you made it this far, thankful for all that you achieved, thankful for all the lessons you learned. When I look back at all the years gone by, I’m overcome with nothing but gratitude!
I’ve experienced my fair share of ups and downs this year. To be completely honest, 2017 hasn’t been my favourite. In fact, I was just thinking about how badly I want the new year to begin when I realized that my personal new year is already here. While I sat pondering over all that went wrong, it hit me that I was ignoring everything that was going right! November itself brought me so much new work. I even started making healthier choices – both for my physical and mental health.
That’s the problem with most of us – we’re so busy focusing on the negatives that we end up attracting more of it. The day we start paying attention to the positives and being grateful for all the good in our lives, our lives will transform! So as we get closer to the next year, I feel we should all make one resolution.
Let’s try to be obsessively grateful! Be grateful for your family and your closest friends, who have stuck by your side through everything. Be grateful that you have access to good food and clean water. Be grateful that you have a job. Be grateful that you’re alive!
One activity that helped me make my mindset more positive was writing down 10 things I’m thankful for at the end of each day. I did it for 30 days as a ritual. On the 31st day, I didn’t need to write a list – my brain automatically started giving thanks for every good thing, hence making me a happier person!
Even if you’re skeptical, try it for a week at least. If nothing else, you’ll end up realizing how blessed you truly are!
