first-date-makeup

It’s a well-known fact that women often spend about 48 hours leading up to a first date obsessing over their wardrobe and makeup options. We all want to look our best, but many of us, albeit unknowingly, end up overdoing it.

A first date is all about representing your true self while highlighting all your great attributes. Hence, it goes without saying that you shouldn’t hide beneath an unrecognizable, thick layer of cosmetics. No, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t wear any makeup at all. The key is balance: the perfect union of simplicity and understated glam.

Here’s how you can hit the right note for a flawless first date look:

Step 1: Laying the Foundation

Every artist needs a clean canvas: start by washing your face. Then, apply your go-to moisturizer and follow it up with concealer and liquid foundation.

What I normally do is mix the Vichy Ideal White moisturizer with the By Terry Cover Expert Fluid Foundation and apply that to my face. Thanks to this, I don’t have to worry about the presence of a dreadful cakey texture, plus it’s easier to achieve the au naturel look. The best part is I don’t even need concealer – this mixture works like magic, covering up every tiny blemish.

Step 2: Powder Power

After you’ve applied the liquid foundation, seal it in with a light powder. I use MAC’s Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation to avoid the oily patches often left behind by liquid foundation. Carry this powder with you in your bag, in case you need a quick fix during the date.

Next up is the blush-on. Now you don’t want to look like you ran away from the circus with bright red cheeks, but a hint of pink is always welcome. Create that slightly flushed look with few sweeps of a shade like Satin Blood Orange by Make Up For Ever.

Step 3: Let Them Eyes Do the Talking

Apply a neutral shade of eye shadow as the base covering for your lids and a darker shade, like taupe or oxblood (the Pantone shade of the year), instead of eyeliner. Please stay far, far away from the glitter pots! Finally, dab some white eye shadow on your brow bone (just under the arch of your eyebrow) and to the inner corners of your eyes to make them look bigger. I used the Estee Lauder Pure Color and Too Faced eye shadows for this look.

Get your eyebrows professionally groomed before the date so they look their absolute best when it’s go time. I hardly ever use brow pencils, but if you like, find the appropriate shade and apply it with a short bristled brush to subtly fill in any natural gaps.

Step 4: All Black Everything

Being a kohl pencil devotee, I hate leaving the house without outlining the inner rims of my lower lids with the Sephora Waterproof Kohl Liner. While it’s a good idea to completely skip the liquid eyeliner, you can apply a thin layer of it on your upper lids (without going too dramatic). I usually use the pen-style Rapidblack MAC Penultimate Eyeliner.

Moving on to my favourite product: mascara! This is the one thing you can be extra generous with when prepping for your first date. Mascara helps your eyes look bigger and fresher, thus the more the merrier. Obviously, you don’t want your lashes to look clumpy so about 2-3 swipes should do the trick. I’m currently obsessed with the Bobbi Brown Extreme Party Mascara, which is great for adding more volume. If you’re looking to add length, try their Lash Glamour Extreme Lengthening Mascara.

Finish with a lash comb to get rid of any possible clumps. The MAC Duo Lash Comb/Brow Brush helps with brow shaping and grooming too.

Step 5: Gloss Over

lipsticks

Begin with applying a softening balm or some petroleum jelly to ensure a smooth, healthy pout. You don’t want to look like you’re trying too hard (oh, the games we play) so red lipstick is a big no-no! Pick something lighter and more feminine, perhaps a glossy shade, which comes across as casual and laidback. In fact, if you prefer clear gloss, by all means go for it! Once again, no loud shades and no glitter, please. Also, make sure you don’t get any lipstick on your teeth, before and during the date.

For this look, I used the Bobbi Brown Sheer Lip Colour – Bobbi followed by MAC Lustre – Lustering.
