“I don’t need more make up” – said no woman ever. Each one of us is guilty of impulse shopping when it comes to cosmetics. However, there are a few essentials in every woman’s make up case which she turns to time and again (well, mostly when she’s running late and doesn’t want to step out looking like a hobo).

Of course, I have a few trusty items of my own too. Being as impatient as I am, these essentials always come to my rescue when I simply can’t be bothered to spend hours getting dressed.

MAC Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation has to be my favourite quick fix product – the application is easy, the finish is flawless, the result looks natural, and it suits my sensitive skin. I’m not a big fan of caking up all the time with lots of liquid foundation, which is why this is one of the best things that happened to me. Look for the shade that matches your skin tone (I use NC40). If you’re suffering from minor scars or pimples, you can use the powder with a concealer brush to cover problem areas. The application can last up till 6-7 hours; of course, a lot depends on how quickly one’s skin gets oily, but a touch up doesn’t take much effort at all.

The blush you use for everyday wear has to be light and add just the right amount of colour to your cheeks – anything too dramatic or glittery will make you look out of place on a regular day. You need to make sure you pick a colour that complements your skin tone and looks natural. My current favourite is the Make Up For Ever Sculpting Blush in Satin Blood Orange (Shade 20/28). As I have a neutral, olive complexion, this warm hue works really well for me.

The eyes are the window to your soul – if you’re not playing them up, you might as well not bother with the rest of your face. The three eye make up products I absolutely can’t live without are a kohl pencil, mascara and liquid liner. Ever since I started wearing contact lenses, Sephora became my best friend. Their waterproof kohl pencils and eyeliners are completely on point, like the Sephora Waterproof Kohl Liner (Keep Black) I’m currently using. The pencil comes with a smudge tip on the other side, perfect for when you’re looking to create a smoky eye effect.

For people like me who are terrible at keeping their hand steady while applying eyeliner, the MAC Penultimate Eyeliner (Rapidblack) is a real lifesaver! The pen-style liner helps achieve a smooth stroke without any trouble. If you’re looking for a prominent, long-lasting mascara, try out the Estee Lauder Sumptuous Extreme Lash Multiplying Volume Mascara(Extreme Black). It’s a miracle product that adds some serious volume and doesn’t smudge one bit.

I don’t always use kohl and liquid liner together, so if you like, you can go with either one, but never ever say no to mascara – it truly makes your eyes pop, especially when you haven’t managed to get enough Zzzs.

Now that everything else has been covered, it’s time to pick the right lipstick. Red is a popular lip colour everywhere, so if you haven’t incorporated it in your beauty box yet, stop wasting time and get on with it already! Different hues of red match different skin tones, so take your time when picking a regular, go-to shade.

The two red lip colours I’m currently obsessing over are the MAC Matte Viva Glam 1 and the MAC Retro Matte – Relentlessly Red. The former hue is an original medium-red with a neutral undertone, ideal for olive skin tones; while the latter is a more pinkish coral red, apt for both day and night wear. I personally love matte lip shades as they last longer and look more natural, however, you could always apply some gloss over it or look for a glossy lipstick if you’re not a fan.

No list of beauty essentials is complete without a make up remover. The best one I have come across, by far, has to be the Elizabeth Arden All Gone Eye and Lip Makeup Remover. It removes waterproof, smudge-proof, and all kinds of transfer resistant make up without any irritation. It’s so hard to find a make up remover that won’t harm your eyes, but this one surely lives up to its description. The product isn’t even greasy, despite being an oil-based formula.
